MightyFly, a drone-based delivery solutions provider, unveiled its second-generation drone “Cento,” which has a cargo capacity of 100 lbs, a range of 600 miles, and a max speed of 150 mph.
The drone is equipped with an internal cargo bay that can carry 96 small packages, which will be loaded/unloaded via an autonomous conveyor belt. The drone can also perform multiple consecutive deliveries on a single charge as it does not require recharging between flights, owing to its hybrid powertrain.
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted the Cento drone a Special Airworthiness Certificate and a Certificate of Authorization (COA) for long-range flights. This will allow the company to operate drones in larger airspace (230 square miles) to test the transition from hover to forward flight at medium and high altitudes of up to 5,000 ft. With these approvals, the company plans to begin testing its drones for last-mile and middle-mile cargo delivery services.
