Lightyear suspends production of Lightyear 0 to focus on Lightyear 2

Product updates

  • Lightyear, a Netherlands-based solar EV pioneer, has suspended the production of Lightyear 0—its solar car which was priced at EUR 250,000 (~USD 272,278)—to redirect company focus and resources toward its Lightyear 2 model—the more affordable solar EV made for a wider audience. This model is priced at EUR 40,000 (~USD 43,558).

  • The announcement comes after the company reported that it had begun production of its Lightyear 0 model in November 2022

  • Analyst QuickTake: The company opened its waitlist for Lightyear 2 in early January 2023 and has already received 40,000 subscriptions from individual customers, as well as 21,000 pre-orders from fleet owners. The fleet orders stem from partnerships that Lightyear established with international leasing and ride-sharing companies Arval , Athlon, LeasePlan, and MyWheels, which will add 21,000 Lightyear 2 cars to their combined fleets.
