Coursera, an online learning platform, reported a net loss of USD 0.35 per share in Q4 2022, missing analyst expectations of a net loss of USD 0.12 per share. The company reported revenue growth of 24% YoY to USD 142.2 million in Q4 2022, above analyst expectations of USD 138.14 million. For the full-year 2022 (FY2022), the company reported a net loss of USD 1.21 per share (down by 5.5% YoY) and a revenue of USD 523.8 million (up by 26% YoY).
The consumer segment was the largest contributor to total revenue during the quarter with USD 79.8 million (56.1% share), up 21% YoY, followed by the enterprise segment which reported an increase of 41% YoY to USD 50.5 million (35.5% share) and the degrees segment which reported a decline of 11% YoY to USD 11.9 million (8.4% share). Coursera also reported that it added 5 million learners during the quarter, bringing its total registered learners to 118 million.
Coursera’s gross margin contracted two percentage points YoY to 61.8% in Q4 2022 led by the increase in the cost of sales. The company’s operating loss widened by 18% YoY to USD 56 million in Q4 2022, driven by the increase in sales and marketing (up 7.5% YoY) and research and development (up 11.8% YoY) costs. The adjusted EBITDA loss narrowed by 70% YoY to USD 5.8 million in Q4 2022, mainly due to stock-based compensation and restructuring charges. For FY2022, the company reported an operating loss of USD 177.4 million (up 24% YoY) and an adjusted EBITDA loss of USD 36.9 million (up 4.1% YoY).
The company’s full-year revenue guidance for 2023 (FY2023) ranges from USD 595 million–USD 605 million and its adjusted EBITDA loss ranges from USD 26 million–USD 34 million.
