Sony launched its PSVR 2 XR headset, which is available for purchase via PlayStation Direct at USD 549 (USD 599 for the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle). However, the headset requires a PlayStation 5 to use (USD 499).
Accessories from the purchase include a set of VR 2 Sense controllers, noise-canceling stereo headphones for the headset (given the absence of inbuilt speakers), and the headset itself. The PSVR 2 features two 120 Hz 2000 x 2040 OLED panels, eye-tracked foveated rendering (enables the rendering of only specific regions on the screen in high resolution, based on eye gaze), adjustable interpupillary distance, spatial audio, and haptic feedback for the headset and its DualSense controllers. The headset launches with roughly 30 games, with another 100 titles in development.
Analyst QuickTake: The PSVR 2 succeeds the PSVR 1, launched in 2016. While it lacks the popular Blu-Ray 3D support feature found in its predecessor, the headset offers significant upgrades. This includes the use of eye-tracking foveated rendering, which combined with the GPU architecture of the PS5, delivers better graphical experiences than Meta's Quest Pro. However, the requirement to own a PS5 for use brings the total cost to ~USD 1,150 comparable to that of the Quest Pro. This acts as a deterrent for value-based consumers amidst rumors of slashed shipment forecasts for the PSVR 2 in January 2023 .
