Meta unveils its XR hardware roadmap till 2027, outlining plans for multiple new XR devices

Product updates

  • Meta executives revealed plans in an internal presentation to release multiple XR devices by 2027.

  • The list of devices will consist of a camera-equipped smart glass expected to be launched later in 2023, an affordable XR headset codenamed “Ventura” to be launched in 2024, a smart glass paired with a neural interface smartwatch to be launched in 2025, and a pair of AR glasses to be launched in 2027.

  • Meta’s smartwatch paired with a neural interface band will allow the wearer to control the glasses through hand movements, such as swiping fingers on an imaginary D-pad. Meta’s fully-fledged AR glasses are said to be designed to project high-quality holograms of avatars onto the real world.

  • Analyst QuickTake: To streamline the product development process for its upcoming XR devices, Meta will be able to leverage its recent acquisitions of smart glass manufacturer Luxexcel , optics and photonics research lab Gary Sharp Innovations , and VR haptic startup Lofelt . In addition, Meta's recently formed AI product team could enable users to build generative AI content through the XR devices, potentially improving traction for its products.
