Burcon NutraScience, a company developing plant-based protein, announced its intention to acquire Canadian plant protein processor Merit Functional Foods, which went into receivership in early March 2023 as the company became insolvent.
Burcon owns 31.6% of Merit Functional Foods as a technological partner and noted the strong strategic fit behind the reason for the acquisition, which according to CEO Burcon Kip Underwood, provides additional revenue sources, better connection to customers and markets, and direct influence over the manufacture of Burcon’s protein ingredients.
Merit Functional Foods was established as a joint venture in 2019 to focus on the next generation of plant-based foods and beverages. In 2021 it opened its pea and canola protein plant in Winnipeg, employing Burcon’s patented technology.
In 2020, Bunge Corporation acquired a 20% ownership stake in Merit for CAD 30 million (~USD 22 million). At the time of entering into receivership, Merit raised secured debt of up to USD 85 million from a consortium of lenders.
