PureCycle Technologies, a producer of recycled polypropylene resin, has signed a heads of agreement (HOA) with Mitsui & Co. Ltd. (Mitsui), a Tokyo-based multinational conglomerate, to develop and operate a polypropylene (PP) recycling plant in Japan. The plant is designed to transform PP waste into an ultra-pure recycled (UPR) resin with an expected annual capacity of 59,000 metric tons (130 million lbs), targeting completion in 2026.
Through this joint project, the companies aim to reduce plastic waste in Japan by manufacturing recycled polypropylene resin and expanding its application in consumer goods, food containers, and automobile interiors. The site location between major population and industrial centers is believed to be a strategic sustainable supply location for critical Japanese industries like automotive, electronics, and consumer product companies.
Analyst QuickTake: The two companies signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the same ultra-pure recycled polypropylene production plant in September 2021. Via the partnership, PureCycle is looking to strengthen its position in Japan and expand its presence across Asia-Pacific. PureCycle is also working on setting up recycling facilities in multiple regions, including Europe and Asia , demonstrating a strong focus on creating a global footprint for its recycling technology.
