Waymo to test its robotaxis in Austin, Texas

Geographic expansion

  • Waymo, the self-driving tech development unit of Google’s parent company Alphabet, has announced plans to test its fleet of robotaxis in Austin, Texas.

  • The company will deploy a fleet of Jaguar I-Pace vehicles equipped with its fifth-generation “Waymo Driver” autonomous driving software for the purpose. The company intends to test the vehicles across central and eastern Austin, including Downtown, Rainey Street, Clarksville, Bouldin Creek, the Market District, Holly, and the Capitol.

  • The tests will not be open to the public but will help the company to improve and evaluate its self-driving technology.

  • Waymo also tested its first-generation Waymo Driver prototype in Austin, back in 2015.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Texas has been a popular destination for autonomous driving tech companies, given its location, availability of academic and research institutions, and the Texan government’s encouragement. In fact, Waymo’s rivals General Motors’ Cruise, Aurora Innovation, and autonomous shuttle services provider May Mobility already have a presence in the state.
