Northvolt, a Swedish company manufacturing lithium-ion batteries for EVs, and Scania, a Volkswagen Group company providing transport solutions, unveiled a jointly developed battery cell for heavy EVs. According to the validation tests carried out, the lithium-ion cells have demonstrated a capacity to power trucks for 1.5 million kms (933,000 miles); equivalent to the truck's whole lifetime.
The two companies began their collaboration in 2017 to develop and commercialize a battery cell for heavy commercial vehicles. Now, the resultant battery cell is to be produced at Northvolt Ett gigafactory in Sweden. Furthermore, Scania will also open a new battery factory in Södertälje, Sweden, in 2023 to assemble battery cells into battery packs.
Analyst QuickTake: In July 2022 , Northvolt also partnered with Stora Enso to jointly develop a battery that contains an anode made from lignin-based hard carbon produced with sustainably produced wood from Nordic forests. The two companies aim for this to be the world’s first industrialized battery featuring an anode sourced entirely from European raw materials.
