California-based cell-cultured meat company UPSIDE Foods (formerly Memphis Meats), has introduced a new range of ground meat products made from animal cells, including chicken sausages, chicken sandwiches, and dumplings. These products are pending regulatory review.
The company has also developed a breakthrough chicken cell line for use in suspension cell culture, which the company claims could substantially reduce the cost of production for these ground meat products.
UPSIDE has been working on a range of new meat products including cultivated chicken filets and the next-generation lineup of whole-textured, ground meat products capable of rapid scalability and cost-efficient production. The company plans to initially launch at a small scale with its cultivated chicken filet.
The regulatory process for UPSIDE's ground meat products, based on cells grown in suspension culture, will be separate from that of its first product, an adherent tissue-based process for which the company received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last year. UPSIDE notes that it will continue to work with both the FDA and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to bring its next generation of products to market.
