Circ, a Virginia-based startup that recycles textile waste, has partnered with Acegreen Eco-Material Technology, a Taiwan-based fiber manufacturer, to manufacture filament lyocell and collaborate on research and development projects.
Acegreen offers lyocell filament ( GreenCell ), which combines natural and synthetic fibers, and will use Circ’s cotton derived from polycotton textile waste for its production. This partnership was also preceded by the successful launch of the " Circ x Zara " collection, made with recycled polyester and cotton fibers using Circ's hydrothermal process.
The two companies had initially partnered to jointly work on researching and developing lyocell filament. As part of this agreement, Acegreen will continue commercial-scale manufacturing of lyocell filament.
Analyst QuickTake: This partnership is likely to allow Circ to reach its goal to recycle 10 billion garments—which accounts for 10% of global garment production—by 2030. The company aims to achieve this target through partnerships and by addressing the sustainability needs of the fashion industry. In September 2020, Circ partnered with brands and retailers such as Kering and Target through Fashion for Good's "Full Circle Textile" project to promote the use of its recycled fiber.
