OneThird, a Netherlands-based food tech company that predicts the shelf life of produce using AI, has partnered with Bakker Barendrecht, the sole supplier of fresh produce for the Dutch supermarket chain Albert Heijn, to deploy OneThird's AI-powered scanner technology in Bakker Barendrecht's supply chain.
OneThirds's technology would provide Bakker Barendrecht with real-time information to better estimate the quality and exact shelf life of strawberries, enabling optimization of "best before" dates and facilitating decisions such as local shipping or shorter trucking distances to maintain shelf life. In addition to strawberries, Bakker Barendrecht is also looking to leverage the technology to estimate the shelf life of other fruits and vegetables prone to spoilage.
Analyst QuickTake: The partnership supports OneThird in achieving its goal of preventing 150 million kg of waste by 2028 and is also a significant step forward as the company focuses on successful commercialization and expansion into North American and European markets. As of date, the company's AI-powered scanner technology covers tomatoes, strawberries, blueberries, and avocados and expects to cover around 10 produce types by late 2023.
