USDA greenlights sale of cultivated meat in US

Industry news

  • UPSIDE Foods and GOOD Meat (the cultivated meat subsidiary of Eat JUST) have received the grant of inspection (GOI) from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for its production facilities, allowing the companies to begin the sale of cultivated meat products.

  • The GOI was for UPSIDE Foods’ Engineering, Production, and Innovation Center (EPIC), GOOD Meat’s Alameda demonstration plant, and JOINN Biologics (GOOD Meat’s contract manufacturing partner).

  • Cultivated meat products from both companies will initially launch at foodservice venues. UPSIDE Foods’ cultivated chicken is slated to debut at Bar Crenn in San Francisco, while GOOD Meat’s cultivated chicken will feature at one of José Andrés’ restaurants in Washington, D.C.

  • Analyst QuickTake: This is a major milestone for the companies and the cell-cultured meat industry. Until now, Singapore was the only country approved to sell cultivated meat products. President Biden’s executive order likely expedited the granting of regulatory clearance, which supported cultivated meat. With its large market size, the US will provide both companies with significant commercial opportunities.
