Origin Materials, a carbon-negative materials manufacturer, has initiated the start-up of Origin 1, the world's first commercial CMF (chloromethyl furfural) plant in Sarnia, Ontario.
The new plant will produce CMF (chloromethyl furfural) and HTC (hydrothermal carbon). CMF can be used to make downstream products like PET plastic, while FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid) derived from CMF can be used in sustainable materials like PEF (polyethylene furanoate). HTC's applications include sustainable carbon black for automotive tires.
The company aims to meet customer demand and develop higher-value products through the commercialization of CMF and HTC.
Analyst QuickTake: The company reported revenue (USD 1.7 million) for the first time during Q1 2023, supported by strategic partnerships to commercialize its bio-based materials. The startup of Origin 1 is likely to further support the company in commercializing its products and scaling production as necessary to meet demand.
