Carbonwave, a Boston-based biomaterials company that upcycles seaweed into plant-based products, has secured USD 6 million from Pegasus Capital Advisors and the Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR) to support its biorefinery model for upcycling Sargassum seaweed into high-value biomaterials.
Analyst QuickTake: Carbonwave is working toward the commercial launch of its leather alternative made from Sargassum seaweed. Previously, in April 2023, the company raised USD 5 million in a Series A funding round to expand production capacity and build cosmetic emulsifier production facilities in Puerto Rico.
