Arkeon Biotechnologies, an Austrian sustainable ingredients company, has unveiled its 150L pilot production plant in Vienna's Seestadt Innovation Hub to convert carbon dioxide into functional protein ingredients using a capital investment of EUR 10 million (~USD 11 million).
Arkeon plans to expand production to full-scale bioreactors with volumes ranging from 800–1,000 sq m and has established global partnerships for innovative protein applications. According to the company, the next phase will include the installation of a demo facility with 3,000L bioreactor systems slated for the end of 2024.
Arkeon's gas fermentation process converts hydrogen and carbon dioxide into customizable amino acids, which can act as highly functional ingredients in various food and beverage products such as sports drinks, meal replacement shakes, protein bars, and alternative protein products.
