Pimax, a VR headset developer, launched its Pimax Crystal VR headset, retailing at USD 1,599.
The Pimax Crystal VR headset offers a 4K resolution per eye and supports local dimming, eye tracking, and foveated rendering. The headset carries a wide field-of-view (FOV) of 140° achieved through glass aspheric lenses. The device can function as a tethered device for PC VR experiences or as a standalone VR headset, with wireless usage possible in both modes. The headset's eye-tracking feature registers a user's eyes 120 times per second, enabling automatic IPD adjustment and foveated rendering. The headset also features four external depth-of-field cameras, eliminating the need for base stations for positional tracking. The Pimax Crystal is compatible with all PCVR games and offers a range of standalone games through the Pimax Play platform.
Pimax anticipates that the Crystal headset will appeal to pilots and flight simulator users due to its high-resolution visuals, which ease reading small text in VR. Customers can test the headset at Pimax's experience centers in the UK, Germany, Australia, and Malaysia before purchasing them online. The company plans to expand these centers to more European and US locations.
Analyst QuickTake: The launch follows Pimax’s announcement to ship its hybrid VR Pimax Portal headset to Kickstarter backers from April 2023 onwards. Additionally, Pimax raised USD 30 million in February 2023 , with funding that was used to improve the company's working capital position to prepare for the launch of the Pimax Crystal alongside R&D investments.
