Checkout.com, a payment infrastructure provider, is launching a proprietary AI-based selfie biometric solution, known as Identity Verification, for customer onboarding and digital payments. The AI platform guides the user through the identity verification process, which requires the user to show an identity document along with their face.
Identity Verification is trained on datasets from “billions” of facial recognition templates and identity documents and has reportedly verified over 10 million identities during beta testing. The company further noted that identities not verified within 120 seconds will be redirected to a team to handle human reviews.
The platform can be used by several industries, including FinTechs, rental and hiring, gaming, and government organizations, and is currently deployed by Uber Eats for delivery driver onboarding.
Analyst QuickTake: Developing Identity Verification was likely supported by Checkout.com acquiring ubble , a remote identity verification solutions provider, last May. Moreover, Checkout.com has continued to invest in product developments, as this announcement comes on the heels of the company launching a card-issuing infrastructure in March. With the launch of Identity Verification, Checkout.com also ventures into the biometric payment authentication space, which comprises companies like AuthID and Saffe that provide remote facial biometric authentication solutions for payments.
