Melodea, an Israeli company producing bio-based coatings for industrial applications, has introduced MelOx NGen, a water-based, plant-sourced coating designed to line the inside surface of plastic food packaging forms such as films, pouches, bags, lids, and blister packs used to hold consumer packaged goods (CPG).
MelOx NGen, approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) as compatible for food contact, also claims to extend the shelf life of foods such as snacks, confectionery, nutrition bars, meats, dairy products, and pharmaceuticals.
MelOx NGen also acts as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based ethyl vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymers, which are widely used in packaging for their food preservation properties, as well as to met-PET plastics commonly used to make lids.
Analyst QuickTake: Melodea entered the sustainable packaging sector by offering plant-based coating solutions, namely "MelOx" and "Melodea VBcoat," as substitutes for conventional plastic and aluminum coatings used for packaging protection. Melox NGen is an upgraded version of Melodea's bio-based and renewable material MelOx , which was launched in December 2021 for paper packaging applications.
