GM’s Cruise starts robotaxi testing in Miami, Florida

Geographic expansion

  • General Motors' (GM's) autonomous car subsidiary, Cruise, has started initial testing and data collection in Miami to familiarize its fleet with diverse road conditions and to collect data as Phase 1 of its operations.

  • Cruise has not yet disclosed its specific plans for Miami, including the number of vehicles deployed, the model of the vehicles, the timeline of testing, and Phase 2 of the program.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Miami is the latest addition to Cruise’s robotaxi operating sites, which includes San Francisco (California), Phoenix (Arizona), Austin , Houston, and Dallas (Texas). Cruise’s primary operations are in San Francisco, where it competes with Alphabet's Waymo. Still, both companies are awaiting permits from California's Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to offer robotaxi services 24/7, facing opposition from residents and city agencies, causing delays.
