Kodiak Robotics, an autonomous truck manufacturer, and Drivewyze, a provider of weigh station bypass solutions, have partnered with the Texas Department of Public Safety to pilot a motor vehicle inspection program for autonomous trucks. The program intends to streamline interactions between autonomous trucks and law enforcement at fixed inspection sites, allowing autonomous trucks to have a pre-clearance of roadside inspections.
As a part of the program, a Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA)-certified inspector will carry out an inspection of an autonomous truck combination, which will be valid for a period of 24 hours. Kodiak would input the result of the inspection, using Drivwyze’s systems to communicate a sample safety data message to roadside enforcement officials at the inspection sites, enabling the trucks that have participated in the program to be excluded from routine roadside inspections.
Kodiak plans to expand the program to other states in the future.
