Brevel, an Israel-based plant-based ingredients startup, has raised USD 18.5 million in a seed funding round led by NevaTeam Partners, with participation from the European Union's EIC Fund and others. The funding included USD 8.4 million raised in June 2022, converted from grants and convertible loans into equity.
The funding will aid the further development of its protein and expand its operations. The company plans to build two large facilities (5,000 and 900,000 liters) and have its products on shelves by 2024.
Brevel is developing a sustainable protein from microalgae using fermentation and light. The protein is flavorless and can be used in various food applications. The company aims to achieve cost parity with plant-based proteins like peas and soy by generating co-products alongside the protein.
