Coursera, an online learning platform, reported a net loss of USD 0.21 per share in Q2 2023, missing analyst expectations of a net loss of USD 0.10 per share. However, the company reported a revenue growth of 23% YoY to USD 153.7 million in Q2 2023, beating analyst expectations by 5.4%.
The consumer segment was the largest contributor to total revenue during the quarter with USD 87 million (a 56.6% share), up 25% YoY, followed by the enterprise segment, which reported an increase of 24% YoY to USD 54.2 million (a 35.3% share), and the degrees segment, which reported an increase of 10% YoY to USD 12.5 million (a 8.1% share). Coursera also reported that it added 5.7 million learners during the quarter, bringing its total registered learners to USD 129 million.
Coursera’s gross margin contracted 11 percentage points YoY to 52% in Q2 2023, led by the increase in the cost of sales. The company’s operating loss narrowed by 20% YoY to USD 38.4 million in Q2 2023, supported by cost control measures. The adjusted EBITDA loss narrowed 82% YoY to USD 2.9 million in Q2 2023, mainly due to stock-based compensation.
The company upgraded its full-year revenue guidance for FY2023 to range from USD 617 million–623 million, compared to USD 600 million–610 million, and revised its adjusted EBITDA loss to USD 19 million–24 million, compared to USD 26 million–34 million.
