Citymapper ceases PASS service due to expansion limitations in contactless travel card

Product updates

  • Citymapper, a UK-based leading transport planning app, announced the cessation of its all-in-one travel card, Citymapper PASS, which concluded its services on June 18, 2023.

  • The company stated that PASS effectively reduced transportation costs for Londoners through a unified subscription. However, limitations prevented its expansion beyond London, despite the intention to create a universal ticketing solution applicable beyond the city's borders.

  • The company plans to redirect its focus toward improving the Citymapper app.

  • Analyst QuickTake: In 2019, Citymapper introduced PASS as an economically viable alternative to London's Transport for London (TFL) contactless travel card, making it available in the UK. While this competitive pricing structure sparked analyst inquiries regarding the company's underlying revenue model, it has become evident that Citymapper encountered challenges in gaining widespread appeal for this solution.
