Prometheus Materials’ bio-concrete absorbs 12x more sound than traditional concrete

Product updates

  • Prometheus Materials, which manufactures carbon-zero microalgae-based building materials using a proprietary patent-pending photosynthetic bio-cementation process, has announced achieving remarkable results in ASTM C423 sound-absorption testing for its bio-cement and bio-concrete technology.

  • The bio-concrete product line from Prometheus Materials has a noise reduction coefficient (NRC) of 0.60, indicating 60% sound absorption—12x that of traditional concrete.

  • The new product line includes masonry units, blocks, acoustic panels, paving stones, and grass pavers, with plans to commercialize the products during the first half of 2024.

  • Analyst QuickTake: This February, the company announced receiving multiple ASTM certifications for its products, such as non-loadbearing concrete masonry units (CMUs) and loadbearing CMUs. The company also launched initial production at the time. The positive sound testing results it has now received further validate its technology, supporting its plan to successfully commercialize its solutions by next year.
