Focused Energy, a company developing laser-based fusion, has signed a long-term strategic collaboration with Oxford Sigma, a fusion technology company, to accelerate the design and development of its inertial-confinement fusion power station device.
As a company that carries out the development of fusion materials and in-vessel component design, Oxford Sigma will be developing the power station design and management schemes for the device.
Analyst QuickTake: This partnership comes after the completion of Focused Energy’s USD 82 million Series A funding round in June 2023 . At the time, the company stated that it would be using the funds to further research and commercialize nuclear fusion. Furthermore, in the midst of this race for commercialization of fusion energy, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, which gained the first net energy gain in a fusion reaction in December 2022, reported that it has successfully repeated the net gain reaction once more, producing a higher energy output than in December.
