Mobile Premier League (MPL), an Indian esports and mobile gaming company, is reducing its workforce by around 50% (~350 employees), given an increase in tax burden between 350% and 400%.
Specifically, India’s GST Council recommended a 28% tax on the full deposit value for skill and chance-based games, an increase from the current 18% fee levied. As such, the company has taken steps to revisit its server and infrastructure costs (major variable costs). Previously, MPL experienced favorable business performance, having turned EBITDA positive in December.
