Simple Planet, a South Korean biotech firm, has announced its plans to establish presence in the US and Canada during 2H 2023. Along with the development of a low-cost probiotics-based serum-free edible culture medium to replace fetal bovine serum (FBS), the North American expansion is expected to bolster its commercialization efforts.
The company produces cell-based powders and unsaturated fats designed to improve the nutritional content and flavor in different food applications. Furthermore, its advanced cell-culture platform and cell organization technology claims to enable large-scale production.
Founded in 2021, Simple Planet claims to be South Korea’s largest cellular agriculture company. The company has received global recognition for its work in the cell-cultured space, including being ranked on the 2022 FoodTech 500 presented by Food Forwarding in the UK and being a finalist in MassChallenge Switzerland 2023, an early-stage startup accelerator.
AnalystQuickTake: With the recent granting of approvals for cultivated meat in the US, more companies like Simple Planet may seek US expansions to capitalize on the current landscape. Currently, the US and Singapore are the most viable locations for cell-cultured companies to seek commercialization opportunities, as their industries are ahead compared to other nations.
