GM’s Cruise ordered to cut robotaxi fleet by 50% in San Francisco after crash

Industry news

  • General Motors' (GM's) autonomous car subsidiary, Cruise, has been asked by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to reduce its current fleet of about 400 robotaxis in San Francisco by 50% due to recent safety concerns following a crash with a fire truck.

  • The DMV is investigating several incidents involving Cruise vehicles in San Francisco and has called for a fleet reduction to 50 driverless robotaxis during the day and 150 at night until the investigation concludes.

  • Cruise has agreed to comply with the DMV's request, issuing a statement expressing its commitment to road safety and its intention to work with the DMV to address concerns.

  • Analyst QuickTake: This incident adds to a series of glitches for Cruise, including cars stalling and causing traffic disruptions, potentially impacting its commercial plans, despite gaining regulatory approval for expanded operations commercially in San Francisco earlier this month.
