Carbo Culture, a Finnish biochar carbon removal startup, has announced the deployment of a new biochar plant in Helsinki, Finland.
The new pilot facility, “R3,” expects to capture 3,000 tons of atmospheric CO2 annually, by utilizing dust pellets as its feedstock. The facility will sequester carbon, improve soil quality, and provide renewable energy solutions in Finland.
In addition, Carbo Culture also plans to develop biochar plants at client locations and intends to sell carbon offset credits generated from these facilities.
Analyst QuickTake: This new facility was funded by a grant funding of EUR 2.2 million (~ USD 2.4 million) received from the European Innovation Council in March 2022. In May 2023 , the company entered a long-term agreement with Supercritical, a British carbon offset marketplace. This collaboration allowed Supercritical to pre-purchase carbon removal solutions such as biochar, direct air capture (DAC), and enhanced weathering via Carbo Culture’s platform.
