Carbfix, an Icelandic carbon sequestration company, has partnered with the University of Edinburgh (UoE) and the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre to evaluate CO2 mineralization in Hellisheidi, Iceland's largest geothermal power plant.
Under the collaboration, UoE will utilize mineral analysis techniques and a unique CO2 fingerprinting tool, which is currently being patented by Edinburgh Innovations, for the project implementation. This new project, referred to as the “INCLUSION Project” received a grant funding of GBP 1 million (~USD 1.2 million) from the Natural Environment Research Council.
In addition, the research project will utilize the state-of-the-art scientific laboratory facilities in Scotland, along with the Carbfix CO2 mineralization project to permanently store CO2 underground in basalts. The project will also research the potential of mineralization in other parts of the world, such as Scotland.
