General Motors (GM) has partnered with Google Cloud to introduce conversational AI technology into GM vehicles. GM intends to power OnStar Interactive Virtual Assistant (IVA) using Google Cloud's conversational AI technologies.
GM will utilize the technology to handle members' OnStar inquiries, such as responding to common inquiries, offering routing and navigation assistance, and recognizing emergency situations. GM plans to leverage AI in its vehicles further to enhance the overall buying, ownership, and interaction experience.
Analyst QuickTake: Today’s partnership builds upon GM and Google’s ongoing collaboration since 2019 for Google’s built-in infotainment software. Furthermore, the automotive industry is among many to have witnessed an increasing discourse surrounding the possibilities of incorporating GenAI technologies. In fact, in March 2023, GM announced that it is exploring using ChatGPT (in partnership with Microsoft, an investor in OpenAI) to perform several tasks, including providing information available on the owner's manual and other program functions. Mercedes-Benz also partnered with Microsoft in June 2023 to test in-car ChatGPT AI on vehicles.
