UK Government bodies to establish GBP 15 million sustainable protein hub

Industry news

  • The Biotechnical and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and Innovate UK plan to establish a GBP 15 million (~USD 19 million) sustainable protein research hub. This establishment aligns with the UK's strategy to invest in sustainable protein and position the country as a global leader in the field.

  • Set to be the largest investment in plant-based and cultivated meat research in the UK, it aims to support projects related to production scaling, cost reduction, and development in plant-based foods, cultivated meat, and fermentation-based proteins.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Earlier this year, the UK government pledged GBP 12 million (~USD 14.9 million) toward the Cellular Agriculture Manufacturing Hub (CARMA) initiative to help British companies and scientists produce cultivated meat at scale. According to the Good Food Institute Europe , the UK government needs to invest GBP 390 million in sustainable protein development between 2025 and 2030 to remain on pace with other competing nations.
