First Light Fusion partners with Sandia National Laboratories

Geographic expansion

  • First Light Fusion, a British fusion energy startup, has partnered with Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia. The two companies intend to test First Light’s amplifier technology on the Z Machine as part of SNL's Z Fundamental Science Programme. Currently, the Z Machine is the world's most powerful pulsed power facility.

  • First Light aims to use the opportunity to test its amplifier target technology in new pressure regimes, thereby significantly de-risking its planned gain demonstrator, Machine 4, which is to begin construction in 2024 and is expected to be operational in 2027.

  • First Light was granted a Z Fundamental Science shot following the successful validation of its target technology on the STAR Gas Gun. Here, First Light fired five shots, testing two different pressure variants of its amplifier targets. Both targets increased the attainable pressures of the STAR Gas Gun from 200 Gigapascals (GPa) to 550 GPa and 950 GPa. This is the equivalent to x2.5 of the pressure at the center of the Earth (380 GPa).
