UPS Flight Forward obtains FAA approval to operate partner Matternet’s delivery drones beyond visual line of sight

Regulation/policy

  • Matternet, a drone-based delivery provider, announced that its partner and subsidiary of UPS, UPS Flight Forward (UPSFF), has received the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval to operate the Matternet M2 delivery drone beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS).

  • UPSFF will use ground-based radar to monitor airspace, eliminating the need for visual observers. It will utilize Matternet Mission Control software to control multiple aircraft from a centralized Remote Operations Center.

  • Analyst QuickTake: UPS first received FAA’s approval to conduct commercial deliveries on a trial basis in 2019 —the same year Alphabet’s drone-based delivery division Wing received the same approval. These developments signify increased autonomy for drone operators and will pave the way for Matternet and UPS to expand drone adoption and scale their services.
