Heirloom, a direct air capture (DAC) startup, has signed a deal for an undisclosed amount with Microsoft to facilitate the removal of ~315,000 metric tons of CO2 over a multi-year period. Heirloom expects to build two commercial DAC facilities to fulfill this agreement.
Microsoft's investment will provide funding for scaling up Heirloom's limestone-based DAC technology. The partnership also aims to support Microsoft's goal of becoming carbon-negative by 2030 and remove all its historical CO2 emissions by 2050.
Heirloom is one of the several CCUS partnerships undertaken by Microsoft. It previously partnered with Climeworks , CarbonCapture, and Running Tide for similar carbon removal agreements.
