Roblox announced a host of new updates at its 2023 Roblox Developers Conference (RDC), including a GenAI assistant for world creation, a new video chat feature, a port to PlayStation (PS), and a change in revenue split with creators on its marketplace.
The company’s Assistant AI allows users to generate virtual assets through prompts, building on its previously announced features in February 2023 . Roblox Connect, set to launch later in 2023, enables in-game video calls as the user’s Roblox Avatar, mimicking real-life facial movements. Roblox also announced that it would release its game on the PS4 and PS5 in October 2023.
Further, the company will let creators that sell assets and tools on its marketplace to keep all revenue from their sales starting later this year (up from a 70% revenue share earlier). Additionally, developers can also sell 3D models on the marketplace from 2024 onwards, with Roblox currently only allowing sales of plugins.
The Creator Marketplace will also allow users to purchase and sell items in USD instead of the company’s native Robux token from 2024.
