According to experts on religious dietary restrictions, lab-grown meat might soon be able to be consumed by consumers following halal and kosher diets if cell extraction and production comply with religious standards.
GOOD Meat convened a panel of three Sharia experts who reviewed its production. Although GOOD Meat’s cultivated chicken does not meet halal standards yet, the company aims to work toward achieving the label. On the other hand, The Orthodox Union (OU) has certified SuperMeat’s cultivated chicken as “kosher.”
Further, the OU and SuperMeat will collaborate to establish guidelines for the industry.
Analyst QuickTake : To ensure their cultivated meat products are halal and kosher compliant, companies may need to adjust their cell-extraction processes and avoid using fetal bovine serum (FBS). Around 20 million people in the US follow these dietary restrictions, and obtaining these certifications could increase the marketability of cultivated meat products.
