Israeli FoodTech startup BioBetter has opened its first food-grade pilot facility for its molecular farming technology using tobacco plants.
BioBetter's genetically modified tobacco plants act as bioreactors to produce growth factors used in cultivated meat. The plants are grown in a large-scale, net house cultivation system and are engineered to prevent the escape of any transgenic or carcinogenic material.
The facility is expected to significantly reduce the costs of cultivated meat production by mass-producing growth factors to enable producers to reach cost parity. BioBetter's technology requires no custom equipment and no additional capital expenditure investments.
