Amazon signs 10-year CDR agreement with 1PointFive; invests in CarbonCapture

  • Amazon signed a 10-year carbon dioxide removal (CDR) agreement with 1PointFive, a joint direct air capture (DAC) venture between Oxy Low Carbon Ventures and Rasheen Capital Management.

  • As per the agreement, 1PointFive will capture 250,000 metric tons of CO2 using STRATOS, the company’s first DAC plant in Texas. Through the partnership, 1PointFive expects to utilize digital infrastructure from Amazon Web Services (AWS) to analyze real-time DAC performance data to optimize plant operations.

  • Amazon also invested an undisclosed amount in CarbonCapture, a DAC startup, via Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund. Additionally, CarbonCapture agreed to provide ~100,000 tons of CO2 removal credits to Amazon, which the latter intends to distribute among its businesses, suppliers, selling partners, and customers.

  • Amazon announced these initial investments into DAC, as a part of its Climate Pledge commitment to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2040.
