May Mobility, a developer of autonomous shuttle services, has partnered with the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) to launch an autonomous micro-transit service in Martinez, California, in early 2024 to improve access to healthcare for the local community. This marks May Mobility's first entry into California.
The CCTA plans to integrate May Mobility's autonomous vehicle technology into its transportation network, adding seven vehicles to its fleet, including three wheelchair-accessible models.
Via, a TransitTech company, will power the service, allowing riders to book on-demand autonomous vehicle rides through the May Mobility app or by phone, using AI-based algorithms to create shared trips.
Analyst QuickTake: Today’s partnership adds California to May Mobility’s growing list of operational geographies. In fact, once the project goes live in 2024, the company will have active operations in California, Michigan, Minnesota, Texas, and Arizona. On a separate note, the CCTA previously also partnered with peer autonomous shuttle services provider Beep in April 2023 to launch an autonomous shuttle program in Bishop Ranch business park in San Ramon, California.
