Amazon launches RFID-powered ‘Just Walk Out’ format for clothing retailers and tech in NFL merchandise store

  • Amazon has launched a new RFID-enabled Just Walk Out self-checkout technology format, aimed primarily at clothing retailers. This enables customers to enter a store, pick up clothing items, and exit the store by tapping their credit or debit card or hovering their palm over an Amazon One biometrics payment device. Each item in the store is tagged with a unique RFID tag, which will be read by the RFID readers at the exit gate and automatically charged to the customer's preferred method of payment upon exiting the store.

  • Following a successful pilot earlier this year during several ice hockey games at Climate Pledge Arena, a multi-purpose indoor arena in Seattle, Washington, the technology was launched at a merchandise store at the Lumen Field NFL stadium in Seattle.

  • The technology was developed in partnership with Avery Dennison, an RFID sensor and digital identification solutions developer.

  • Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology is currently available at more than 70 Amazon-owned stores and more than 85 third-party retailers across the US, UK, and Australia.
