German drone delivery provider Wingcopter has launched a pilot project called LieferMichel that aims to deliver everyday goods to residents in remote areas of Michelstadt, Hesse.
As part of the "Innovative Air Mobility" funding directive, the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport funds the project with a total of around EUR 0.43 million (USD ~0.45 million).
The Wingcopter drones will deliver non-perishable goods to predetermined landing points outside of villages, and the goods will then be transported to customers by electric cargo bikes.
Wingcopter aims to improve local supply in remote areas, provide better options for residents, and offer ecological benefits by reducing the need for small errands to be made by car. The project will run until the end of 2023 and will be continued if successful. Frankfurt UAS and Vodafone are collaborating on the project.
