Waymo, the self-driving tech development unit of Google's parent company Alphabet, is expanding its operations in San Francisco to cover the vast majority of the nearly 47 square-mile city.
The rides were previously restricted to a “couple of thousand” users in the city’s northeastern neighborhoods — including Fisherman’s Wharf, Embarcadero, and Chinatown. As per sources, today’s expansion will help Waymo to reach “tens of thousands” of users.
The rides will still remain limited to riders who showed interest via the waitlist.
Analyst QuickTake: The expansion comes just two months after Waymo and its competitor, General Motors’ self-driving vehicle unit, Cruise, received approval from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to charge for fully autonomous rides (i.e., without a safety driver) around the clock in San Francisco.
