Heirloom, a direct air capture (DAC) startup, has signed license and collaboration agreements with Leilac, a decarbonization technology company, to deploy electric kilns at Heirloom DAC facilities made from Leilac's technology. The partnership aims to lower carbon removal costs and scale the electrification of hard-to-abate industries like cement and lime.
Heirloom intends to use Leilac’s technology to heat limestone and produce CO2 and calcium oxide. The CO2 will be sequestrated, while the calcium oxide will support Heirloom's process to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. The company expects to have DAC facilities powered by renewable energy through the partnership with Leilac.
This development was preceded by Heirloom and Leilac signing a memorandum of understanding in February 2023 to integrate Leilac’s electric calcination and CO2 capture technology into Heirloom’s DAC plants.
