Matternet obtains FAA Type Certification and Production Certification for its improved ‘M2’ drone

Regulation/policy

  • Matternet, a drone-based delivery provider, has obtained US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Type Certification and Production Certification for its more efficient M2 delivery drone variant, which comes with hardware and software improvements. The company is the only non-military drone maker to have obtained these certifications.

  • The Type Certification signifies that Matternet has met rigorous safety standards and approves aircraft design and components used. The Production Certification verifies that the company possesses the necessary quality management and manufacturing capabilities to produce the drones according to the approved design.

  • The company is currently actively producing its updated M2 delivery drone system, with plans to scale operations throughout the US, Europe, and the Middle East.

Analyst QuickTake: In September 2022, Matternet was granted its initial FAA Type Certificate . Shortly thereafter, in November 2022, it obtained a Production Certificate for its initial M2 drone. Today's announcement represents a noteworthy achievement for Matternet, having secured these same certifications for their enhanced drone iteration.
