Orbital Marine, a Scottish developer of tidal turbine technology, reported that it has been selected by the European Commission's Horizon Europe Programme to deliver a multi-turbine tidal energy project known as European Tidal energy pilot farm focused on Industrial Design, Environmental Mitigation, and Sustainability (EURO-TIDES).
The key work streams in the project will focus on accelerating the commercial deployment of Orbital’s floating tidal stream technology.
Other participants in the project include Ocean Energy Europe, Laborelec, Marasoft, European Marine Energy Centre, Center for Wind Power Drives of RWTH Aachen University, Energie De La Lune, and the University of Edinburgh.
Analyst QuickTake: This announcement comes following Orbital being awarded an option agreement from Crown Estate Scotland for a new 30 MW tidal energy project in the Westray Firth in March 2023 . Under this, the company would deploy 12 Orbital devices. Orbital has already deployed the 2MW O2, the world’s most powerful tidal turbine, adjacent to the Westray project.
