Carbfix injects CO2 dissolved in seawater

Product updates
Partnerships

  • Carbfix, an Icelandic carbon sequestration company, has successfully injected dissolved CO2 in seawater underground in a project named SeaStone. The CO2 was deposited at a depth of ~400 m below sea level into the basaltic subsurface at the Helguvík location in Iceland.

  • Carbfix undertook the project in partnership with the universities of Geneva and Switzerland, Iceland GeoSurvey (ISOR), and University College London. This marks the world’s first attempt at permanent CO2 mineralization, using seawater as the solvent.

  • Additionally, Carbix would also assess the effectiveness of this technique with monitoring methods over time.
