Pachama, a California-based carbon credit platform, has partnered with Ducks Unlimited, a nonprofit wetland conservation organization, and PERENfra, a water infrastructure investor, to develop Flyway Forests, a reforestation project that connects small landowners in the Lower Mississippi River Valley.
Flyway Forests aims to transform agricultural land in the Mississippi River Valley into original bottomland hardwood forests using native species. Landowners will be compensated for placing portions of their land under permanent conservation easements. The project would also benefit water conservation, local biodiversity, and migratory species.
Flyway Forests will cover 3,000 acres in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas and is expected to sequester 400,000 tons of CO2 over 40 years. Phase one includes 1,400 acres in Mississippi and phase two will reforest an additional 1,600 acres in 2024.
