Pokémon Go developer Niantic announced the incorporation of GenAI features to its AR pet game, Peridot. The update utilizes a customized version of Meta's Llama 2 large language model (LLM) to analyze real-world objects captured by the phone's camera, converting them into words for the AI to interpret and respond to in-game.
This allows the game's virtual pets, known as Dots, to interact more realistically with their environment. Each Dot's personality profile influences its interactions, leading to varied responses based on the objects around it.
Analyst QuickTake: The update will help bolster user retention for the game, which was launched in May 2023 . Notably, the launch failed to live up to critics’ expectations, with users citing a slower pace of gameplay compared to Pokémon Go and the monetary cost of hatching new virtual pets.
